| Channel 9 |
So, you're demonstrating Photo Story 3 tonight, right ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yes yes, just main thing, how it is, how you view your stuff. |
So, you import your pictures and err |
And erm |
So here your edit controls, that rotate, automatic red eye and so forth. |
So if, we produce video that is 4 by 3 aspect ratio |
If any pictures here is not optimised for 4 by 3 aspect ratio |
for instance it's either portrait video, or a still image |
or a still image that's done with digital SLR that's 3 by 2 aspect ratio, right ? |
We provide user with this, with the option of automatically cropping it |
based on pretty interesting technology of attention model recognition, |
So it analyses the picture, figures out what is the most important visual part of it |
and suggests to you automatically cropping it |
so to make it 4 by 3 aspect ratio, but still keep the most interesting part so you can tell your story about it. |
So for instance if I click this button it will analyse all these things, |
and try to figure out what can be easily cropped. |
Since this is a panoramic image and since it's too much to drop, |
it will not attempt to crop this one, so let's see what it will try to pick up. |
Well, this is obvious, so that's fine. |
We'll take this one. |
The other cool thing is here, that you can automatically, so it shows you the |
you know, the picture before, we see this is like bordered because it's a portrait picture. |
And how it suggests to crop it. And you can immediately adjust it and say - |
'Well I just want to concentrate on the girls face and I want that' |
Of course when you enlarge the face you immediately saw that she has red-eye problems, which we'll correct. |
So this girl's had red-eye, so we'll just automatically try to fix it up. |
And it determines, figures where her eyes are, and fix it. |
| Channel 9 |
Wow ! I remember spending hours in Photoshop doing that ! |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So we're done with that, so then we'll move here, |
And here we can you know, apply text, title text to any picture. |
I won't type it right now, but essential to any picture you can position it, and align it to the top. |
| Channel 9 |
Wh, what does it look like when I just type Channel 9 ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
OK so fine, so let's do aahhhh... |
So any, any erm, what is it called... |
Truetype font on your system we can use. |
And then you can erm, you know, do your usual things with colours |
Right ? And then you can apply - you can position it |
I hope that's good... |
| Channel 9 |
Yep, that's cool. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
OK. |
So next, and so essentially with this kind of adding this caption |
You can insert this erm, essentially break a story into different like chapters right like your idea. |
| Channel 9 |
Title pages ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Title pages, right. |
Oh yeah yeah, we also can add a bunch of effects here, so if you want your writing to stand out |
and for instance, where is the blur here ? |
Washout, washout, yeah, so we - no, it's not that interesting |
but for instance black and white, or something else |
different things, or of course you can say 'I don't want any of that on this picture', and move on. |
So by the time you are here, application figures out how to move your pictures so they'll look very nice. |
So we can always preview it, and look at the pace of the story, and what is highlighted for you and so on, so forth. |
So I want you to play that, to look at how |
I mean at the pace, so, this picture when you add text to the picture, by default it's static so you can read it. |
But all this stuff starts to move, I want to pay attention to the pace of it. |
So it figures out it's a panorama, so it shows it full screen |
The pace is adjusted based on the size of the panorama. |
It's in line, I mean feeling-wise, with the rest of the picture |
so it's not rushed through the panorama in five seconds like any other picture. |
| Channel 9 |
Wow. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So it figures it out, so it moves your things - here's a cropped girls face. And so on, so forth. |
Let's say you are you know, happy with this motion, |
But you know this guy has this er... |
You want to put, you want to attract peoples attention to this thing he has on, this mask. |
So you can essentially create pretty big zoom motion. |
| Channel 9 |
So the left picture's the start position ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Start position. |
| [Together] |
And the right picture's the end position. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
We also show you the number of pixels here, and the number of pixels here. |
So you can also judge, even when you publish the video |
Right, you know that your smallest zoom should be comparable to the ... |
The smallest portion of the picture you're showing should be in line with the resolution, |
otherwise we'll have to stretch it, right ? |
So for instance if we produce 640 by 480 movie, this should be pretty good. |
And so if you look 3200 by 800 - this between four and five - this is around like 22x digital zoom. |
So I just wanted to show you. |
And if you notice, the duration is automatically adjusted. |
So as soon as you adjust motion, we recalculate duration, |
so it still looks smooth - not rushed, not too slow, not too fast. Let's look. |
And you can have immediate preview, what it will do. |
So let's look at this long zoom. |
It's very smooth, it's very very evenly paced. |
Very few guys do it, especially some of the slide shows based on Flash. |
And they have like tunnel effect, because the deeper you zoom, |
they like speed up like crazy, when you zoom out they start fast then they very slow it down, so. |
| Channel 9 |
Heh (geeky laughing) what kind of algorithm do you do that with ! |
| Woman in background |
.... do that external ... |
| Channel 9 |
Ahaha, is that patented ? |
| Woman in background |
Yeah, it's patented yeah haha. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So you see, the default motion is five seconds right ? |
But if you want to really create some dramatic effect you say |
'OK I want to concentrate on this shell here' |
'And I want to start on this and show all the facets of this one, and hang around in there'. |
And then go to the whole picture - we automatically figure out for how long to move it. |
And when you preview it you start with full screen, you know - just this shell... |
so you can just look at it very closely. |
And then go to the whole thing. |
| Channel 9 |
Was this all coded in C++ ? |
| Woman in background |
Yep. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Okay. |
| Channel 9 |
Do you use Visual Studio or... ? |
| Woman in background |
Yep. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Of course ! |
| [Together] |
Of course hahaha. |
| Channel 9 |
I hoped you'd say that - hahaha. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Okay, so emmm and you can create this - |
And the other cool thing is right, when you first come here |
The program shows you what default motion is assigned |
So you know that it starts here and ends here. |
For instance if you want to concentrate on more creative er |
kind of interesting effect of mother looking at her daughter |
you can position your rectangle here |
Then to make sure it's exactly the same size rectangle so it's a perfect pan, |
You can say 'Set the end position to be the start position' so it's exactly the same. |
And then you can move it to the girls face, right ? |
| Channel 9 |
Ahhhhh ! |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
You'll have just straight pan, and finish at girls smile. |
So here you go. |
So have the heading of conversation - so mum talks to the daughter. |
And you finish up on her smile. |
So it gives you all this creative ... |
| Channel 9 |
That's awesome ! |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
... creative controls. |
| Channel 9 |
Thats awesome. |
Can you, can you show me the music ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Right, right sure. |
| Man in background |
Shall we go to transitions ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yes, we also edit in all Movie-Maker transitions like more than 45 transitions. |
And here you can see that it shows, this is you know, by default it's cross-fade. |
But before you really commit to it you can see everything that, how it will look. |
And we have you know 3D transitions , like flips and page curls and what-not. |
So you can experiment with all these things. |
You know people sometimes go really ga-ga on it, |
I saw this one woman in our visibility show, brought pictures of her son ? |
Playing baseball .... and all the transitions she changed to the stars, |
because he was a star, and so she wanted everything to be a star. |
| Channel 9 |
(Geeky laughter) |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Right, anyway, so.... |
But for unobtrusive, very natural moving thing I think |
a lot of people prefer cross-fades still because it's out of the way. |
So here's our music selection piece. |
Which just allows you to select existing music, |
Er so for instance here, I select the existing music and it covers as many pictures as it can. |
And you can preview it, OK, and it will show you both music and pictures. |
| Music |
#Piano Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
OK but you can drop multiple things here... |
And we will fade out of this one and go into the new one... |
| Music |
#Slow Piano Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
It will fade out and then the new music track will start... |
| Music |
#Faster Piano Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
But the really cool stuff here that was introduced was this create music as I said. |
So for instance let's select this picture and 'Create Music'. |
And here as I said, you have multiple pieces of music, er |
Different styles of music that fall into the eleven style like classical, country music, dance, |
funk, jazz, cool jazz, jazz-latin |
So for instance this seems like a .... |
| Channel 9 |
You don't have Eminem on here do you ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
No (laughs) |
But we have funk, we have hip-hop so for instance, |
This looks like a, the beach scene, so let's try Caribbean... |
I can adjust mood- cheerful - you want high intensity, you want to have you know, high tempo. |
| Music |
#Cheesy Calypso Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And so it starts, and then it ends as a song so we don't fade out this one. |
OK so and you drop it on, it just shows you where it starts where it ends. |
The cool thing about this as we compose it automatically, |
If you put let's say another picture under it, it automatically recomposes. |
So if I make this picture last, |
and I preview it now, this picture, |
This picture will have the end of the song. |
So it automatically recomposes it, automatically shrinks it. |
| Music |
#Caribbean Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And as I said, you can create a bunch of things like that. |
Just to show you how, you will feel the difference in the mood, |
So let me show you this Amadeus, so - piano, that's sentimental music |
and then I'll show you the anxious music just to, just so you can hear it out. |
and figure it out whether you hear the difference. |
So here's sentimental. |
| Music |
#Amadeus Sample# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
OK, so let's go to Anxious. |
| Music |
#Suspenseful Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So you can play with a lot of those things, you can also play with for instance, outer space |
With the band that plays this, so here's more piano. |
Check this one out. |
| Music |
#Outer Space Band Style Music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Or clockwork, or twangs. |
You can essentially play with a lot of variety here. |
| Channel 9 |
But can you lay audio on top of audio ? |
And record voice on top of the audio ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yes, absolutely. So here, |
Then let's record something, right ? |
This has built in mic alright, so it's going to be bad but... |
(Narrating) "OK so here's Johnny, he's proud wearing his snorkel, he's about to plunge into the water". |
Right, so we'll have both so when you preview it... |
| Music |
#Recorded narration over music# |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
You can reduce volume of the music comparatively, so |
My voice is going to be much better heard... |
Yeah so you can combine those things. |
| Channel 9 |
Excellent. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And at the end like I said you can figure, |
You can, here's the activities you can do - you can save it for your computer, |
And it has multiple profiles - send it in email, |
So I want to share for instance 'Send it in email', so we have panorama we have all these deep zooms. |
It's building a story based on your video, it figures out what profile |
and what for, for, first of all it's very fast. |
The other thing is - Oooh did we do ... ? |
| Man in background |
We took audio - well we can talk about it. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So for email, it tries to have the video clip under one Meg |
so you can send it with most of the email programs. |
But of course you can go, lets say you're on an email server that allows two megabytes or more |
You can go and tweak the profile and have a larger video. |
| Channel 9 |
How long approximately is one megabyte video ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
With this profile - it depends on the profile, right ? |
But with 320 by 240 profile, one megabyte is probably about one minute, ten seconds. |
So it's a very sizable video. |
So what we think where this kind of thing would be very good you know, |
You go with your kid to the park, you shoot a bunch of photos and you email them immediately. |
You create your story, You put some music, you narrate it with some funny comments, put some captions. |
And you immediately email it. |
So it's just an instantaneous thing you can share it between friends and family. |
You go to the party, shoot a couple of pictures and you send to everybody. |
| Channel 9 |
Is there any limit to the audio I can record ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
You mean length - yes each picture up to five minutes. It's more than enough. |
Because then the motions become boring because not moving anywhere. |
| Channel 9 |
So, interesting, OK. |
Cause what I want to do is do a radio show on top of my photo story. |
And you know, layer it on top. |
Turn down the music but do like a ten minute audio blog post on top of my Photo Story. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So for instance it's created 240 by 480, it' can put it under, I mean it made it under 500 kilobytes, right ? |
So let's say lets say we tell it to do 320 by 240, just manual. |
So it picks up on it and makes it that scarce and then we can go |
and you can then go into 320 by 240 and say let's do another one for it. |
Yeah I just want to show you what kind of quality you're going to get |
You know, around one Meg. |
| Channel 9 |
Right. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And this one's going to be more than a minute video. |
| Channel 9 |
Now for my DVD player, I... |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yes, since it's a free distribution, we don't include any codecs for burning (to DVD) |
But what we do - since if people have DVD burners, they probably have the burning software - |
But what we do - see, this is one, this is still less than one Meg. |
But what we do smartly, because when you move over still images on TV, |
you have a lot of, you know, kind of bad effects, artefacts, like moires you know - |
all these thin lines, horizontal lines come alive and it's just very distracting. |
So we do smart blurring of these things, so on TV, for our DVD and VCD profiles we do a good job there. |
So your video will have better, you'll have a better viewing experience. |
So let's check it out for a story. |
That's what you can - oh, sorry - so view your story, |
I want to show you the quality, so lets see if the video size is 100% |
| Channel 9 |
You can make it full screen. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yeah you can make it full screen, but I suppose the quality will get.... |
But that you can mail, and this is, you know - one minute 20 seconds, that quality of video. |
Now you can see whatever, the expression on his face. |
| Channel 9 |
That's really really cool. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And as you saw it was just a couple of clicks. |
| Channel 9 |
Some email programs will let ya send around 10 or 15 megabytes at a time so. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
And say you continued doing it, and it will let you put in your email client, attach the video and so on, so you can go back. |
And overall we provide 14 profiles, so you can just sent it away |
We provide a bunch of profiles so for, you know if you have a good computer |
You can create a really big one, if you have good pictures, providing the resolution up to 1024 by 768 |
But it's going to be pretty much - not sure, yep... |
Let's do 800 by 600, you can see that if your pictures are good it's going to be stunning looking. |
Because you know, it preserves everything. |
| Channel 9 |
You're still in a WMV file format ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So even at this, we'll check this out - the size of 800 by 600 video |
for almost a minute and a half, minute and 20 seconds, and we'll see the size. |
| Channel 9 |
Now who's your competition ? |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So we have several products out in the market right now |
in the from 30 to 50 dollar range that do different type of things. |
Some of them allow, you know, quite similar |
What shall I say - freedom in some of the - how to specify motion. |
Not, not as much as we do, but allowed to do it. |
But you know they're, they, some of them are only for instance to create your video and produce DVD out of it. |
So for instance the quality of the preview suffers, it's not very good. |
But when you burn a DVD it looks good on TV. |
Erm, some of them don't provide as much control so for instance you can control |
errr motion, but you cannot control the duratin of transition, |
Or, the duration of transition is not very individual, it's half a second. |
So you cannot create a lot of things with their videos, you know, |
MTV type effects you won't be able to create with those because it's just too long. |
Erm but so, you know, I would say as a free download I mean it's just - nothing touches us ! |
| Channel 9 |
That's really really neat, OK. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So let me show you, so this is 800 by 600. |
Almost one and a half minutes, 4 Meg. |
So let's see the quality of this thing. |
| Channel 9 |
Uhuh, much bigger. |
Yep. |
So you get a little bit bigger video but much better quality. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Yeah because I mean, you can see you picture preserved |
his optical safety lens or whatever, and it's just, your photos come alive here. |
| Channel 9 |
That's really cool. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
So let's see that shell, because I think that shell is going to look stunning with all the... |
Yeah - look at that. |
You can see the pearl, the pearly glow of light. |
So its - |
| Channel 9 |
Much better quality, yeah. |
Or you could go even bigger. |
| Vladimir Rovinsky |
Oh yeah, it's just bound by how good is your machine. |
| Channel 9 |
Well congratulations, that's really neat, a neat product. |
Thankyou for taking some time in showing it to us. |
