Ahh, the Heckler and Kock G36. |
Deadly in the right hands. |
| Lorna Campbell |
Ah, Agent One. |
I've been so looking forward to this moment. |
| Johhny English |
Well in that case, I'll try not to disappoint. |
| Lorna Campbell |
You overestimate your power over women, Mr English. |
| Johhny English |
I'd say that would be virtually impossible. |
| Bough |
(whispering) sir... |
Sir ... |
SIR ! |
| Johhny English |
Ouuhhuggh ! |
| Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English) |
Johhny English is promoted to be Agent One. |
And of course, he's not really good enough for the role. |
But it is a role he has always dreamt of having. |
He's always dreamt of this idea. It's something, he's read all the books |
and he's you know, and of course the funny thing about Johhny English |
As opposed to most comic characters in spy movies |
is that actually he's genuinely rather good. |
He's not a complete klutz, he's not a complete buffoon. |
He actualy he drives quite well and he shoots quite well and, you know. |
But of course he ju.. the problem, his problem really |
is that he just loves it too much. |
| Johhny English |
Johnny English, I'm here to see Pegagus. |
Sooo, no sense rushing things. |
| Secretary |
There are certain items you need to sign before your briefing. |
There's your new retinal ID card. |
And this is your level nine security clearance. |
Sign and date please. |
| Johhny English |
Euuurh, Ah ! |
Oh, reminds me of the old service issue ballpoint. |
I remember every agent would carry a pen that looked just like this. |
Completely innocent to the untrained eye, but click it twice ... (pop !) |
| Secretary |
Ooooohhh! |
| Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English) |
He just gets so involved with it, he loves being a secret agent so much |
He just gets so involved with it - he loves being a secret agent so much that he oversteps himself. |
He always thinks that he's better at something than he actually is. |
He's the sort of person that in a hurdle race, would jump the first seven hurdles extremely well, |
But he'd be so busy waving at the crows whie he was taking the last hurdle |
that he would trip and fall, its that, he falls at the last hurdle |
It's the last ten percent of his activity that's fatally flawed. |
Err, and it's into that area that he should never go. |
But he always does, cause he's so full of himself, |
He's got enough smugness and arrogance and what have you to always go further than he should. |
| Peter Howitt (Director) |
Johnny English isn't really a liability, he just steps into the wrong room |
or steps into the wrong piece of grass that's got the cow pat on it. |
But keeps going. |
Erm, so, he believes in himself, he trusts his judgement and will see his judgement through to the end. |
And that's the fun for us, that he doesn't stop, |
He just ploughs through his mistakes and keeps going. |
| Johhny English |
Agent one ! |
| Agent One |
Gentlemen. |
I'm here for my documents. |
| Johhny English |
Ah, Boff - Agent One's documents, please. |
| Bough |
Ahem. |
| Johhny English |
Er your mission documents, Agent One. |
Including the codes for the submarine hatch, which I've checked myself. |
| Agent One |
Thankyou. |
| Johhny English |
So is it just France tonight or, or will you be slipping over the Pyrenees as well ? |
| Agent One |
If I told you that, I'm afraid I'd have to kill you. |
| Johhny English |
Oh, hahaha, mueweeelll. |
| Ben Miller (Bough) |
The main thing I liked about the script was, it's got this fantastic beginning |
where all the rival agents are completely removed |
through Rowan's actual fault. |
And so he ends up through his own incompetence being the only agent |
that we have who's capable of dealing with the, em the er potential theft of the Crown Jewels. |
And I think thats just a really good premise. |
So he gets off on the right foot and it just sort of goes on from there. |
| Sound Effect |
Church bell tolling |
| Johhny English |
The greatest secret agent England's ever had. |
Snuffed out in an instant. |
But there's always another agent waiting to step into the breach. |
| Bough |
Absolutely, Sir. |
| Johhny English |
And every last one of them is gathered round that grave. |
| Q |
Everything in order then, England ? |
| Johhny English |
I think you'll find it's rather more than just in order, Sir. |
You're now entering the most secure location in the whole of England. |
| Sound Effect |
Boom ! |
Moooooo ! |
| Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English) |
Having been basically a very junior, suburban employee of the British secret service, |
Johnny English has been promoted to Agent One status. |
Of which he's extremely proud. |
And at a reception for the newly restored crown jewels |
- which of course end up getting stolen because Johnny English is in charge of the evening - |
Erm that he sees across a room, a wonderfully beautiful woman, played by Natalie Imbrughlia. |
And of course he's full of himself - he's been promoted, he's got the Aston Martin |
he's feeling absolutely great, and therefore he also thinks |
I deserve that girl, thankyou. She's clearly the one for me. |
So, he singles her out for one of his 'well, good evening' sort of conversations, err |
And of course he um, he messes up that conversation |
Because it's just, y'know, he just won't let go, he doesn't know how to just stop and consider things quietly. |
He's just on this roll, you know, he's just having a great time. |
| Lorna Campbell |
So, are you here alone, Mr English ? |
| Johhny English |
It's how I choose to live my life, Miss Campbell |
Women want safety, security - I can offer them nothing but danger |
| Lorna Campbell |
Some women find danger very attractive. |
| Johhny English |
Women, like you Miss Campbell ? |
| Lorna Campbell |
Women like me expect men like you to find that out for yourself. |
| Johhny English |
Uhhhrrr. |
| Waiter |
Madame ? |
| Johhny English |
Oh it's for me actually. |
And could you rustle up some of those cheesy nibblers that are going around ? |
Now ... |
| Natalie Imbrughlia (Lona Campbell) |
Something funny that springs to mind is when, |
The scene where Rowan comes up through the lavatories. |
And he's covered in poo ! |
And sometimes Rowan is so serious about things you know, and he was saying |
'You know I just - can I have a little bit, I think it needs a bit more poo just right here'. |
And seeing someone covered like that, that's really thinking |
about how the scene should play out, I find that hysterical. |
And he's in and out of that mode the whole time, you know. |
Sometimes he's being very serious about how things should be, |
And then he's goofing around, and |
All in all I think no-one gets too relaxed about how things are put together, |
And that's something that has been really great for me to see in a comedy film, |
is that it is taken quite seriously, it is comedy but everything has to be right |
and it's still, how it's pieced together is really important. |
And Rowan's been very very concerned with the storyline and the drama of it. |
And that things stay real to life. |
That, you know - somethings happening and it has a purpose ? |
It's not just to get the gag to happen. |
| Peter Howitt (Director) |
Rowan has a wonderful line, turn of delivery. |
He can deliver a line with an acidic arrow. |
He's got great timing, obviously. |
Erm, and he can make you laugh with a look. Because he has got a funny face. |
He's got a face that you like, and also it makes you laugh. |
But I think it makes you laugh because it's not what he does with his face |
It's what he's thinking with his eyes. |
And that goes back to the intellectualising about it. |
Once it's thought through, if something bad happens and he kinda goes ... |
Well that's a funny face. If something happens and he goes ... |
I can't do it. But if you believe the character is having a moments dilemma |
then he can do something with a very small, almost nothing movement of the eyes |
that a lot of other actors can't get a reaction from the audience with a whole load of face pulling. |
And he just has, he has every area covered. |
| Ben Miller (Bough) |
I mean there are so many areas that you could praise Rowan for |
But the one I think that I admire the most is his tenacity, really. |
He will do things over and over again erm |
I would hesitate to say until he thinks he gets them right |
Because quite often you get the sense that he doesn't even really manage to achieve |
what he really really wants to get. |
He just gets somewhere there and kindof has to settle for that, you know. |
He kind of erm, yeah it's his tenacity really. |
| John Malkovich (Sauvage) |
Rowan obviously plays a sort of |
quite hopeless, kind of clueless English secret agent |
who's mission it is to stop me from this dastarly deed for Queen and country, I dunno. |
He's really fun to watch, like all comics or... |
Cause they always seem to me incredibly serious and |
thoughtful and , uh |
So perfectionist. |
And he just always seems to be in some kind of contemplative state. |
Uh, and it's extremely funny to watch. |
| Lorna Campbell |
Do you like sushi ? |
| Johhny English |
Oh, suu-shee - I practically live off the stuff. |
| Lorna Campbell |
Oooh - you're brave. They say that sea urchin is the ultimate acquired taste. |
| Johhny English |
It's a personal favourite of mine. |
| Lorna Campbell |
Would you excuse me for a moment? |
| Johhny English |
Mmpph. Mmmurrgh. MMmmpphhhuurrr. |
Help ! |
| Peter Howitt (Director) |
Er John Malkovich is playing Sauvage. |
Er wihch is fantastic of course. |
Er and he's a mixed bag, I mean like all villains. |
There are various components to his character. |
There's the good side, the charming side, the icy side |
The ruthless side and the crazy side. |
And John is able to play all of those quite neatly, and to switch from one to the other. |
And he has just, you know, a very good command of the camera |
and understanding of the language of film cause of his vast experience. |
And so, he doesn't need to do very much to get an effect. |
And one of the things that probably works very well with a villainous person in a film is an enigma. |
A sort of worrying enigma. |
And John has a worrying enigma. |
Erm, and he'll also - you can press his fast forward button. |
And he'll just go through the roof for you. He, he's fearless. |
| Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English) |
But he just provides a very good foil for Johnny English. |
Cause he's , I mean there are two ways of playing villains. |
One is to be, one it to growl and look nasty and to shout at everyone. |
And the other way is to be incredibly charming and smily and nice and rather quiet in your delivery. |
Er, and only occasionally showing the steel and the madness |
which is an essential part of any spy movie villain. |
And John captures it perfectly, just he's so sort of languid and - 'oh you know its, its' |
Er and of course being French of course, it does help |
And because John lives in France I think he obviously, I think he has a sort of inside track |
to the way that French people think and speak. |
| Natalie Imbrughlia (Lona Campbell) |
I was a big fan of John's actually. |
And was quite nervous when I did my first scene with him. |
Especially because he's playing the bad guy, |
and the first thing we did together was erm, |
shots when Johnny English and Lona were having this dance scene, |
and we get whisked, we're trying to get off the dance floor |
and we're confronted with Sauvage |
with this menacing stare. |
And we were supposed to stand by the camera and like hold the stare |
so that we could get John's shot. |
And I was so scared I kept wanting to run away, and Rowan literally had to hold me in place. |
Because, I kept wanting to run away, because - oooo ! |
He's scary ! He's very, very strong. |
As an actor - he has a very big presence and, er - but he's really down to earth as well |
like he's been very approachable and er, he's been really great to work with as well. |
I fell like I'm really really lucky. |
| Ben Miller (Bough) |
Yeah, the wonderful thing about working with John Malkovich is his freedom. |
I mean he literally, you know, I've never , er acted with someone |
Who was so erm |
Free, you know I mean, he kind of, he does it |
I mean inevitably in the film you will just see him do it one way. |
But you know he did it cer - every line, every performance was done so many completely different ways. |
Erm he can improvise, er |
He can er, he can |
You know, contact emotion you know, at the drop of a hat. |
You know from , really rage to almost kind of kind of , you know |
Really kind of very subtles stuff you know, he's just erm |
He's a virtuoso, you know. |
| Russian |
What are we going to do about English ? |
| Natalie Imbrughlia (Lorna Campbell) |
If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about English. |
'e is not threat to us, I 'ave is flat bugged. |
| Sound Effect |
# Abba # , Martial arts sounds |
| Johhny English |
Errrllooooo-yo ! |
Hoh hoh hoh hoh -- ha ! |
Ha |
Ha ho ha ho ho - ooooooo |
Hoh ! Owwww ! |
| Peter Howitt (Director) |
Rowan is the head of the department. |
And Boff is a very keen junior, you know, assistant member of the team. |
They've both been launched into a status they weren't expecting to be at. |
Johnny thinks that day was going to come anyway so he was prepared mentally for it. |
Boff is like a kid - 'Great, roight, so fantastic sir, so, right we'll do that then shall we ? Good.' |
He - Boff is very very keen, very dedicated, very loyal to Johnny, doesn't ever contradict him. |
Johnny by return, even though he's quite condescending to Boff, |
is never rude or puts Boff in the line of taking the blame for something Boff hasn't done. |
he doesn't use Boff as a scapegoat. |
There's a mutual respect. Although there's a definite pecking order |
which Johnny is very keen to keep in place - |
I'm up here, I'm the Boss, and you're Boff. Boss - Boff. Haha. You know. |
| Ben Miller (Bough) |
Ahh my character's called Boff, err. |
You never actually find out in the script if he has a first name. |
Err but we suspect it's Angus. |
Er Boff is basically Johnny English |
Johnny English's sidekick. |
I mean he's basically - he's like er Johnny English's P.A. |
And erm his job really I suppose is to er |
is, is admin, hah. |
In the field, just making sure everything is ticking along, running on track. |
Making sure that Johnny English has got everything that he needs. |
That flights have been booked, tickets have been bought. All that kind of stuff. |
But as a result of Johnny English's impetuousness, he quite often |
finds himself in very dicey situations. |
And I think the crucial thing about the whole script is |
Johnny English has been promoted perhaps slightly beyond his capabilites. |
And sort of as a consequence, Boff has been promoted beyond his as well. |
So he's having as much difficulty coping with these new challenges as Johnny English. |
| Russian |
Those idiots are right behind us ! |
| Bough |
Pull left, Sir ! |
| Johhny English |
We're never going to catch them in this - change places Boff ! |
I'm getting in the Aston. |
Right Boff - take me up ! |
Swing me out Boff ! |
Down. |
| Sound Effect |
Car horn tooting |
| Johhny English |
Up - UP ! |
| Bough |
Sorry ! |
| Sound Effect |
Boooomm ! |
| Natalie Imbrughlia (Lona Campbell) |
Pete is great. |
I don't know that, I think he's one of the main reasons that I'm doing this film. |
because he, I was very nervous from the start. |
After reading the script, before I even met with him I thought - oh you know, I don't know. |
And he's , he's an actor himself so he's nurtured me all the way through the project. |
He read through my lines with me before I auditioned |
And really went out of his way to make me feel comfortable |
Because he knew I hand't done this in nine years |
And I was really throwing myself in the deep end |
And I don't know I would haev been able to do it so confidently and comfortably |
if it wasn't for the way he handled it. |
| Ben Miller (Bough) |
Yes, unusually for somebody who's an actor, he's a very very good director. |
He never tells you what to do. |
He never tries to constrain you. |
You know he's very er , he's very you know sympathetic and understanding |
to whatever you might, to whatever you might be trying to achieve. |
And he erm, he's really prepared to give you space. |
You know and I think that's real directing skill. |
So I mean he's er, he's a batallion |
Er hahahaha |
He's basically a three pronged attack. |
Erm and I think he's doing a brilliant, brilliant job |
He's also a good laugh, he's also very funny. |
And er he's very rude to me which goes down well. |
| Natalie Imbrughlia (Lona Campbell) |
I think people will enjoy this film cause it's a different slant on a spy comedy. |
And it's, it's not too serious, but it's not too silly at the same time. |
Hopefully the characters are interesting enough that people are going to get emotionally drawn in to the story line. |
And they're going to be falling off their seats laughing I think - |
cause we've been laughing the whole way through making the movie, so. |
I just think it's going to be very entertaining really. |
| Rowan Atkinson (Johnny English) |
Lorna, having thought that Johnny was basically a bit of a pratt |
Er which of course he is a bit of a pratt |
But er she during the course of the movie discovers all the good things about him |
which we hope the movie brings out, |
which is that he's a good man, you know, he's a good hearted man |
and he means extremely well, and he does his very very best |
and he doesn't give up - he's someone who will not stop, you know what I mean, |
until the aim is achieved - even if he goes down a completely ridiculous and erroneous road |
But nevertheless he keeps going. Erm. |
And I think that those qualities are things that Lorna begins to appreciate. |
And towards the end of the movie she, she admits |
that actually she has feelings for Johnny |
She would quite like to get to know him rather better, |
which of course takes Johnny completely by surprise. |
Cause I can't imagine any woman has ever said that to him before. |
| Lorna Campbell |
Sir Johnny English. |
| Johhny English |
Her Majesty did seem very grateful. |
| Lorna Campbell |
She's not the only one. |
Mmmmmm. |
You are full of surprises. |
AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh ! |
Johnnyyyyyyyyy ! |
